| Our Ugly Master Bedroom. (I do love the floor though!) |
Or,
2.You can do what I am doing and try to do it yourself. The previous owners put wallpaper on wallpaper. See the fancy boarders? And why the hell anyone wouldn't cover the entire wall in wallpaper if beyond me. The previous owners never primed the wall either so the glue is sticking to the wall and I have no idea how I am going to get it off.
I thought this job would be a snap because the advertisement on the steamer box said it would be. Look at the woman on the box. She appears to be actually enjoying herself. Me? I am sweating like a pig. The steamer is for lack of a better word...steamy. Old wallpaper glue is dripping down the walls and the floor is littered with old wallpaper. But be quick because the wallpaper will re-wallpaper itself to the hardwood floor if you don't get it off before it dries.

| Our furniture is similar to this. |
I have about 2/3 done and taking a break. I am guessing getting the wallpaper off is going to be the easy part. Next the walls will have to be sanded, primed then painted. There is not a bone in my body that has any sense of design but I know I want the accent colour to be purple. I would like the walls to be neutral but not dark and depressing. Any ideas? Seriously, I am clueless. The furniture we have in our bedroom is quite dark. (It is called solid cherry) so the walls need to be on the lighter side. I have seen many pictures of your homes and I know there are some potential interior decorators among you so speak up and give me some free advice.
As I was stripping away wallpaper today I was thinking about how nice it is when the black dog is not hanging out with me. Yes, today is a good day.

Good deal on a good day. I sprayed this goo stuff that I got from Home Depot on old wallpaper and it worked well. Goo off or something like that. It was awhile ago.
ReplyDeleteHow about Pinterest for ideas?
A soft green with purple accents works, or a soft gray. Wallpaper sucks. My old kitchen had vaulted ceilings and wallpaper all the way up.
ReplyDeleteI remember getting truly nasty, truly ugly wallpaper off the walls in one of our spare bedrooms. Many bad words were said before the job was finished. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI am glad it was a good day!
ReplyDeleteHooray for good days!
ReplyDeleteOoh DIY, that's a slippery slope. That's how I ended up with a kitchen floor that looks like I murdered someone in there.
ReplyDeleteI would have a mess if I did that, lol.
ReplyDeletePurple is a warm color, so I would contrast it with a cool color. Purple and green go nicely, or even a soft teal.
I would go get paint samples and hold them next to each other, to see how well they contrast.
You have said enough to make me stop at option #1 if I ever need to remove wallpaper:)
ReplyDeleteContact Sonny at 155 Dream Lane for some great decorating ideas. Her blog is on my sidebar.
Removing wallpaper turns me into a raving lunatic. I hate it! If I go to hell after I die, removing wallpaper will be my eternal punishment :)
ReplyDeleteWhen we bought our home, there wasn't a lot of wallpaper, but it had to be removed (cause I hate wallpaper). I wanted a homemade solution, so I found one on the internet that works great. I'll share below. Maybe it might interest you (or not :)
- Perforate the wallpaper surface with a wallpaper scoring tool.
- Mix 1/3 cup white vinegar with 1 litre of warm water (I use hot; as hot as my hands can stand it).
- Fill up a spray bottle or use a large sponge, and thoroughly dampen the wallpaper.
- Wait 5 to 8 minutes for the solution to dissolve the glue, and then scrape off the wallpaper with a wallpaper scraper, or just pull it off if it removes easily.
I was skeptical when I found this recipe, but it worked like a charm. The job went a lot easier than I expected and I didn't require a straight jacket as I thought I would :)
The only time I ever wanted to murder someone was when I had to strip wallpaper and hang new wallpaper.
ReplyDeleteOh, okay, there was that other time too but we won't talk about that.
I, too, have had to remove wallpaper. Worst job ever.
ReplyDeletePurple and a light grey. Seriously, modern and gorgeous. Sprinkle in a few butter yellow accents. Get to Pinterest and look for inspiration!
I'm glad the black dog is not around. If he does come for a visit just give it a beef bone and make it go look for a place to go bury it.
ReplyDeleteLight gray will look great with the purple accent color. Nice.
Something like a turquoise-y blue goes well with purple. Or yellow? (Well it looks good on flowers)
ReplyDeleteI hate stripping wallpaper. You have my sympathy.
"I thought this job would be a snap because the advertisement on the steamer box said it would be."
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA! I've been fooled by that same promise and a similarly delighted-looking woman. Wallpaper removal is hellish. I've vowed to never own a house with it again. [shudders]
