It seems like I was just doing a post about doing my income taxes but here I am a year later doing them again. I have a learning disability and have been assessed at about a grade three/four level in math. It is a long story with a mean teacher that used to hit me on the head with her knuckles with resulted in tears and giving up because she always asked. "Do you have rocks in your brain?" I thought I was stupid and useless so I just gave up.
All of my receipts are organized. It should be a little easier this year because I know the program now. If you are the praying type you can pray that I don't rend my clothes and throw myself into a snow bank before the process is over.

Update - I am done, done, done! Yay! It only took about 7 hours and I have a headache and a sore neck but that is it for another year. I even did my husband's taxes while I was at it. And yippee, I am getting money back this year. It will go straight onto my overdraft but it is better than paying.

  2. My senior year Trig teacher used to yell at me, "If you spent as much time thinking about this as you do crying about it, you'd be doing a lot better."
Yes. I literally cried in her class as a senior. Luckily, it was Trig and who the hell ever needs that?

  3. Our taxes are (finally) with the accountant. Sigh. And I hear you on the maths front.
    Good luck.

  6. We have an appointment with an accountant tomorrow. I'm afraid. Very afraid.

Remember last year when I dropped Business Math after what, a week? Couldn't even figure out the calculator. I'm math-tarded

  7. I remember having to do my income tax when i was in the States... it was so confusing and I was a student so did not want to screw anything up... so i went to this group, who camped at Walmart, and hired them for 45 dollars to help me out...now that is quite expensive for a student... but honestly I was so afraid that I went for it... do they have such services close by? Good Luck!

  8. It's the least wonderful time... of the year. (Sorry for the ear worm). ;)

  9. Okay, it's totally impressive that you've done your taxes. Ours usually wait until, oh, the last possible second, and then we're in a panic and racing to find documents to get to the accountant. Sigh. Your way sounds much, much better!

  10. Certainly not the most anticipated time of the year :)

  11. Ugh, you just reminded me I have to do that soon. I'd pay someone to go through the Turbo Tax for me if I could afford it. I'd endure a day of waterboarding rather than do the simple step-by-step instructions of modern tax form filling out. Torture is preferable to legitimate tax filing. It would be fun if you were a super rich person. It would be like playing a game of where you can shuffle your money and hide it to avoid taxes. Like a financial Flappy Bird. But no, not for the lower-middle-class. This is going to be worse torture than looking at my monthly pay stub.

  12. Back when I ran my own business I had to do sales tax returns every month and I HATED it. Me and numbers don't get on.
What an awful way for a teacher to behave. You have done really well to get past that and be able to do anything at all with maths.

  13. That has come around quick. I can relate to feeling stupid about things in life. Usually how to be with people. It feel good to be organised and start to leave those old scripts behind.

  14. Seven hours?! Mon dieu.

I hope that teacher rots in hell somewhere, if there is one.

  15. If you get money back it was worth the seven hours of work :)

  16. Seven hours??? Oh my goodness. No wonder you had a headache.

Honey, I am so sorry to hear about that terrible experience you had with a teacher at such a tender age. I hope that ass is no longer in the school system. Hugs, Mina

  17. That teacher was a major asshole. The impact that had on you as a vulnerable child is an absolute outrage.

I remember on thing about living in Canada I don't miss. Filling in those damned income tax forms. Over here, it's pay as you go and if there's an error, it's your employee's fault. Of course, if you are a company owner, then the dreaded form is still needed to do.

Hey, getting money back is good, eh. You are in my thoughts, my friend.

    Gary :)

  18. Oh my gosh -- I am so behind on taxes this year. Always do my own. You now have given me the incentive to get busy on them -- lucky you that you now have your taxes done. -- barbara

  19. What an awful teacher - good grief!

There's no learning disabilities here, if you can muddle your way around a tax return. "Impressed of Calgary" over here - horrible job. Well done, and hurry up Rev Canada with a cheque please!
