Latex Allergy Extreme

My appointment with the allergist yesterday was most interesting.  I don't just have a latex sensitivity or even a latex allergy.  It is a Latex Anaphylaxis. It is a very rare (she has only ever had one patient this severe before) that she did not follow through with the entire test as she was concerned I could go into anaphylactic shock right there, or worse after I left her office.  She recommended an epi-pen and a medical alert bracelet.  This is all so weird to me.  I had no idea it was that bad.  I mean I knew I needed to avoid latex because I displayed symptoms but I didn't know I could die from it.
Anyway, She also did a bunch of other testing and it turns out I have no other allergies (including cats, dairy, wheat, peanuts, shellfish or soy.  The only one that was positive was dust mites.  It was also severe but not  anaphylactic severe.  I just have to wash all my bed linens in hot water and have a mattress pad and pillow cover for dust mites.  I also need to keep my bedroom dust free.  I don't have carpet in the bedroom so that is very good.  She gave me an inhaler because my lungs are all buggered up from the dust mites. (Pun intended.)
So, that was my day!  I got to sit and talk to my dad and it made me so happy.  I feel so fractured right now and he helps to make me feel more whole.
My son's play went splendidly!  The next play he could be in is "Hairspray" but I think he has decided to opt out.  He needs a break.  He has been in 10 major productions in 5 years and it is time for a break.  He also just does not want to do  Hairspray!  ha ha
OK, I am off to de-dust my bedroom.

  1. I did not realise that people could be allergic to latex and certainly not so seriously. Perverse of me perhaps, but it puts me in mind of rubber fetishists.

Latex is something people find useful in so many ways, even as in the case of the fetishists who get attached to it.

It's good your doctor has you in hand as it were and that you can now get on top of those terrible allergies.

  2. Of course there's latex in lots of things. It might be worth having a chat with your dentist because some types of filing use it and most people don't realise.

Your teeth could be giving you low-level, chronic problems without you knowing.

  3. Despite Allergies being a pain in the a**, I am so glad you found out what causes them... At least now you can try your best to avoid them.
Chatting with your dad sounded so good to my ears that it brought a smile to my face.
I am so impressed by your son... wow! it would be so awesome to see some pictures of him performing and read your reflections on his acting.

  4. It's good that you had the testing and now know the severity of the allergy and can be prepared.
Glad you got some meds so your lungs will soon feel better too.
Nothing wrong with taking a break, he deserves it after participating in all those plays!

  7. Birdie -- Dust mites -- yikes -- didn't know mites were associated with dust. I always have dust so maybe I have mites! You are lucky not to have rugs. I really think all wood floors through out keeps the dust down. Latex allergies, I have heard, can be serious. I heard that it used to be used on bananas -- but that was a long time ago. Take care -- barbara

  9. I'm catching up on reading after being really lax about posting and reading my friends blog. I'm reading about the hard time you are having. Christmas must have been so hard for you and for your dad. Your thought about testing your blood for grief is so profound. Good that you and your dad got to spend time with each other. As for your son - Broadway in a few more years?
