The Equator

How is it that some of you can live 3 blocks from the equator?  It was 28 C today.  That is about 82 F. Maybe I have just spent too many winters on the west coast of Canada.  When I was 20 I went to Los Angles and I thought I was going to die.  Not just "ha ha I think I am going to die" but "I have heat stroke and I am vomiting with the worst migraine of my life" going to die  I think it was 104 F in the shade.  Having no health insurance I decided to just wait to die and besides, I couldn't stand up and get into the car.  It was probably the sickest I had ever been.  It didn't help that my now ex-husband didn't want to run the air conditioner in the car because it consumed too much gas.  Being the good submissive Christian wife I did not argue.  (Yes, it may surprise you to know I was at one time a good submissive Christian wife.  I was 20 so let's just leave it at that.)  Anyway, I am off topic as usual.  I was so sick and I vowed I would never move to any place hot.  My heart called for home.
Because it was so hot today I bought one of those cooling neck wraps.  I love it already!  Already my body temperature is going down.  It was cheap and I have already ordered more. So how is it that you all do it? How do you live in the heat? You must have a secret because you are clearly walking around and fine.
We went to the nursery today and picked up some goodies so now that is it 7:55 and cooling down I am going to go into my yard and plant some lavender and blueberries.

  1. I agree, Birdie. I read about those poor bastards living in Texas or some other heat wave hell hole and I thank the Goddess I'm Canadian.

Seriously I'm LUCKY I don't have to leave the house here in Michigan where it's NOT suppose to get into the 100's, day after day! So, to answer your question..I have no frigg'in idea how my husband works in the heat we've had this year..he comes home exhausted and I have a small meal on table, he takes a shower and falls asleep in his recliner..and I can't complain about that cause he does it every day!
Can't wait to hear others comments..from say Texas, Florida, etc
    ~~Peace~~

  3. It helps to have air conditioning.. I couldn't stand the heat without that luxury. I do seem to cope with heat and humidity better than those around me though. But then again, they cope way better with cold and dampness than I do.

  4. This side of the pond it's freezing! (well, around 14C - that's 57 degrees) Maybe we could share then we'll both come out about right?

  5. We just become accustomed. And we adapt. Summers are tough and we don't do as much outside as we might like. We use air conditioning if we have it and if we don't, we suffer.

  6. I'm one of those poor bastards living in Texas. ;-) Last summer we had something like 40 + days in a row of 100F and above. We've only had a couple of those days this year, and unfortunately this week is going to be full of them.

  7. We've had quite a heat wave haven't we? Personally, I'm good with it - the cold is much harder for me. Granted, we have a/c which is set at 27 - and the basement is too cold for me. We were driving from Belize to Cancun a couple summers ago - it was hot but I didn't notice so much. I kept drinking water but somehow, I got heat stroke anyway. I'd still rather deal with the heat. My husband has a paving company. Now, I have no clue how they manage to pave in this heat. It's not fun.

  8. It was 44 degrees here in Southern Ontario yesterday...that is...like 104 degrees fahrenheit!!!
    My garden is shrivelled...
My hair is flat and furry...
my bra is soaking wet from sweating...
We only go outside if we HAVE to..what the hell is going on??? It is like the Winter, when we stay inside all the time...I am fed up with the humidity...

    AHHHHHHHHH...thanks...I feel better now...

    Cheers!
    Linda :o)

  9. Thank you for your very sweet comments on my blog post! You're welcome to come and snoop around my crafty space any time!
The heat... triple digit temps are not fun. We drink a lot of water. And generally we hibernate in the AC. But in the evenings, if we are on the shady side of the house, (where the deck is) and if there is a little bit of a breeze, we enjoy going outside. I also go out every morning to water my plants. It has been so hot and dry this summer that I'm even watering the bushes and trees, that normally just make it on their own with whatever nature provides. Not this year.

  10. i don't do well in the heat either... makes me soooo ill!

i do the cooling neck wraps, about 3 cold showers a day, and most importantly - i'm a slug that stays indoors until the sun is well below the horizon :)

  11. Yes, we suffer. And spend as much time indoors as possible. Here in SC we like to refer to ourselves as "delicate flowers wilting in the heat" but let's be honest: in reality, we are big balls of sweat with dripping wet hair and red faces, leaving moist butt stains on every piece of vinyl covered furniture that we encounter. Pretty picture, no? I envy your 82 degrees :-)

  12. I tell myself it isn't as hot as I think and seriously mind over matter will help a little I just told my 10 yr old this as she was complaining it was way to hot, I said once you tell your brain it is hot it registers that and yes helps it become hot just like cold you have to tell yourself this isn't to bad or it will be bad. Our brains do do what we tell it but other days dang it is HOT!! love the neck thingys they help :)

  14. Wow 82, that's nice weather here then again it's flooding in the streets right now and we think that's somewhat normal too. I think people are acclimated to where they live. I've seen people from up north turn purple and sweat their socks off two min. after they walk out of the airport while the rest of us are just fine. I went to Chicago once in March and boy was that HORRIBLE! I had packed for March in New Orleans. March in Chicago is DEAD WINTER by New Orleans standards. Those people thought I was bonkers for constantly complaining about being cold. Hell my lips were blue and I thought my ears were going to fall off.

  15. That cooling neck wrap sounds just the ticket. How is the heat in the night? Hope it's not affecting your sleep too much. x

  16. Lavender and blueberries and the cool wrap sound like a great combination. Woo-hoo! Heat is deadly. I love it and can live in it, but I am realizing I am a Yankee at heart.....Bring on the snow!

  17. Great post, and fun blog! I think I'll have to return for more visits :) I also can't handle too much heat. I start to melt and foam at the mouth...he he... I've no idea how people live in really hot regions.

Saw the mention on Debra She Who Seeks' blog and had to come check it out. Well.

I hope you don't think me a nutter, but I went back and read a ton of your old posts. I can totally relate to your feelings of grief and perimenopause! You're very funny too and I just wanted to let you know that I've enjoyed reading and I have bookmarked you now.

    Nice to meet you... :)

  20. I live in the Southwestern desert of the US. Couple of secrets... 1. your blood thins out after a year of living here. I'm a native, so I'm good :) 2. A/C in our house, A/C in the car, and A/C at work. You only go out in the heat if you want too. I do work out in the mornings at 5 am outside and now that monsoon season is here, the humidity about kills me on top of the heat. Normally, I can deal with just the heat. I had heat stroke a couple of weeks ago. But you suffer through, and re-hydrated. The rest of the year is gorgeous and worth dealing with the heat for a few months. We don't have any snow during the winter and that makes me happy :)

    Those neck coolers are amazing!
