You all know I am Canadian, right? Well if you don't you do now. What comes to your mind when you think of Canada? Here is an example. When I think of the United States I think of baseball and hot dogs. When I think of Portugal I think of a rooster. When I think of New Zealand I think of sheep. When I think of Norway I think of blonde people and my (blonde) neighbor yelling at her (blonde) sister in Norwegian something to do with cutting a circle in the middle of a birthday cake. (I still have no idea what that was about.) When I think of the United Kingdom I think of the Queen and Big Ben.
OK, so you get the point. I am quite sure these images are in my brain because I have never traveled. But it brings me to this. What do you think of when you think of Canada? Snow? Beer? Hockey? Well, I saw a grand total of less than half a foot of snow this year. I drink an occasional beer. So here's the thing... Hockey. I hate it. What kind of Canadian hates hockey? THIS ONE! The playoffs are on right now and "my" team (Vancouver Canucks) is playing for the all important Stanley Cup and I don't care! People are driving around with flags on their cars and everyone is wearing the team jersey. Everywhere you go there are signs that say, Go, Canucks go! (how original) and I am wondering if the world has gone mad? It is a stupid sport. The players make way too much money. When the team scores fans act say "we" scored. No, "we" did not score a goal! The team did! I am glad we are down to the last six games because I am tired of all of it. Stupid hockey.
PS- My lovely American readers stop reading here. You have been warned. The only reason I will watch the score is because I don't want a Canadian team to lose to an American team. I still hate hockey but I am still Canadian! (I also think I need reading glasses because I can't read this type. Shit.)
Elaine's reaction to the English Patient is how I feel about hockey...

LOL.... so hilarious... I have to admit that I like hockey and have been watching the playoffs... I am rooting for the Canucks... But I do see your point about them being paid too much...
ReplyDeleteOne thing that comes to my mind when thinking about Canada is Maple Syrup... Putin (that delicious fries with gravy dish) Vacouver Siland, CN tower... White and red... I Am Canadian beer even though i do not drink it... Clamato... Zellers... and.... other hockey teams... LOL... TADAAA! there you are...
I love your posts Barbara... so light, sweet and funny!
Oh, Lana. Zellers? Dear god in heaven help us all! I hate that store just as much as I hate hockey but that is for another post. Vancouver Island? LOVE IT! Why? Because that is where I live and that is where you can come to visit me any time!
ReplyDeleteLOL... HAHAHAHA! (I am laughing so hard now I can hardly type)...
ReplyDeleteI will take you up on the Vancouver Island visit, would love to meet you face to face... we did in 2008 while I was preggers with my daughter and had a blast of a time in our trailer reuniting with friends we have not seen in years... will definitely be doing that again...
LOL... I am still laughing...
Birdie, very funny and witty post!!
ReplyDeleteI've been to 3 hockey games in my life and I was just freezing thru most of it and the fans only react it when there were fights! So I told my friends that we should go to a boxing match next time.
I have to say that I sort of am in awe of Canadian hockey players. I can still remember those Olympics when the U.S. beat Russia and I had the hugest crush on one of them -- there'e something very manly about hockey -- a primitive thing -- and far more attractive to me than football, for sure!
ReplyDeleteBirdie, you are really funny. I'm between America and Canada now - relative here and relatives there. But sports has never been my forte - no hockey, no football, not even baseball.
ReplyDeleteI sse that you are a Quaker. I was before I turned 13. When I talk about being a Quaker or the Quakers, people always ask, "What's a Quaker?"
ReplyDeleteI feel exactly the same way about the sports here. EXACTLY!
ReplyDeleteLike- why do we care what those guys are doing? We're not doing it. I suppose the players are our gladiators and I don't need one of those.
I feel a certain pride when a Canadian team plays an American team, except I think the Boston team has more Canadians on it than Americans. Who knows anymore?
ReplyDeleteThe Edmonton Oilers were in the playoffs a few years ago and the excitement was contagious, even though I don't watch hockey. I'll watch it if I know the players, used to date the Captain of the hockey team when I was a teen.
Birdie, you crack me up with laughter! I'm with you...I hate sports. I hate hockey too. I live in Texas: Dallas Cowboy country (football). The people are like rabid animals when it comes to supporting their team. I just roll my eyes and mumble: "get a life".......
ReplyDeleteI just have to say this... when I think of Canada all I remember is an old English teacher I had in University who said that in Canada people left the house without keys or even closing doors. He said it was a place very safe. Is that true?
ReplyDeleteAbout hockey... did you know that Portugal is the only country where they play it in roller blades?
Thank God for your posting..that was hilarious..I needed a pick me up and your Elaine clip ..just made me laugh so hard
ReplyDeletehaha... we have something in common, i hate hockey too.
ReplyDeleteWell CONGRATULATIONS! Canada Hockey rules! The Canucks just won.
ReplyDeleteI am an almost Canadian. My dad was born in Montreal and that was where all of our large, extended lived. We spent summers there and I would come home saying "aye".
My dad and his numerous brothers learned to skate as they learned to walk - So this ledgend has been handed down. The streets were ice all winter back in the 1920's so it was all hockey. One of my uncles played for the Canadiens back when there were no protective helmets and not many teeth left in the players mouths. I learned to skate with hockey skates when I was 6.
When we lived in NJ a new arena was built for the Jersey Devils and our building manager always gave us tickets for their box. I loved it and learned to root for the Devils - Except when Canada, Oh Canada came to play. Then all bets were off.
It's true you see some really weird people who are bizarre when it comes to their teams. Can't explain that myself.
Yikes. Forgot to say congratulations on the House.
ReplyDeleteI've been oblivious to the hockey play-offs, and I guess I kind of prefer it that way ;)
