Things I Hate That Other People Love

Ok, break is over.  I was going to be off longer but in the past when I take a blogging break I never come back.

My topic tonight is things that I hate don't like (there is 'don't like less offensive?) that other people love.

1.  Parades - Standing for hours to have someone come along and stand in front of me and I end up not seeing a thing.  The parades where I live are painful and boring.  All it consists of is a bunch of city alderman driving by in cars that have advertising on them. There are also businesses in their cars advertising.  Boring.  And the weather is usually way too hot or raining.  (I am going to give one more parade a try when I go to Oktoberfest.  I bought seats in the grandstand so I will be able to see. After that parade I may be able to add parades to things I like.)

2. Julia Roberts - She lost me back in Pretty Woman.  It pissed me off that we were giving young women a message that prostitution was in some way glamorous and not degrading. It pissed me off even more that we are still feeding women the crap that women need to be rescued. I do not think she is a talented actress.  Every movie she has that fucking huge mouth with that loud obnoxious laugh.

3. Black Licorice - Is there any worse taste on the face of the planet?  I think not.  A few years back one of my bosses gave me candy with black licorice flavouring and I almost fainted.  Yes. I hate it that much.  I spit it out and she gave me a look like I had sacrificed a kitten.

4 .Make-up - I have had problems with acne since I was a teenager and that is the reason I don't use it but I actually hate it.  When I wear any make-up I feel like a freak.  I can't stand the feeling of my face being coated.  Mascara makes my eyes feel heavy.  Lipstick makes me feel like I have had my lips injected. Even powder and foundation annoy me. Hate it. I won't go into the safety issue and the crap that is in it that gets absorbed into your skin.

5. Reality T.V. Shows - I know.  Watching Reality T.V. is what normal people do but I can't get past the fact that we are encouraging bad behaviour such as lying, cheating and bullying.  (Celebrity Gossip can be lumped into this because it is just more encouragement of idolizing people exhibiting bad behaviour.)

6. Pumpkin Pie- As I age I realize that I am not alone on this one but pumpkin pie is in my opinion almost as bad as black licorice.  It is so thick and it bites your tongue back.  Awful stuff.  Maybe it became popular the year when there was an apple famine and they still wanted pie but that is no reason to keep eating it.

7. Facebook and Twitter- I don't care that you are driving your kids to school and I don't give a shit that you played Farmville today.  And I am not in the least bit interested that you "became a fan" of Crest toothpaste.  I am not interested in reading about the trivial daily minutiae of your life. My own life is boring enough.  And who the hell has 726 friends?  I call bullshit. My guess is if you met 3/4 of those people on the street you would not be able to say hello to them by name.  As I have said before, I think social media is keeping us out of touch with each other, not in touch.

8. Hockey - I have mentioned this before so I will not elaborate.  Apparently I am going to Canadian hell for hating this but I would rather go to Canadian hell than watch this pathetic waste of time.  How the fuck does Nashville have a team?  Seriously? Nashville? When I was growing up getting into the NHL was a major accomplishment. Now there are way too many teams and it has become a watered-down cash cow.

9. Shopping - I can't wrap my head around spending hours in a mall with the crowds, loud noises and the smell of the food court. And the amount of money people put out to buy shit that was made in a third world country because it has a certain label is beyond me.

10. Music Recorded in the last 20 years - OK, I love Adele and Susan Boyle because they actually have talent.  The rest of the music is i-tuned shit.

What do you hate that other people love?

Addendum - I also hate fabric softener.  I do not like my clothes and towels etc to feel all coated in oil and reeking to high heaven.  That smell that it emits is not not "morning fresh", it is a noxious smell created in a lab, likely carcinogenic. Pass also the smells in laundry soap, dish soap, hand soap...

  1. Nine out of your ten I can support but I LOVE licorice. One of my favourite sweets is chocolate covered licorice and I think it benefits them both. But each to their own.

Hockey's not a problem in the UK because virtually nobody plays it - but football.... now THAT I hate.

Great post. I might steal the idea, if you don't mind.

  2. I hate the same things you do... after spending two years in that 'third world' type of lifestyle in Colombia, I am amazed at the shit people collect in the US and call it IMPORTANT. We need food, shelter and clothes - but not designer shit that is sold at $300 per inch for something that doesn't even cover up the who-who.

I am disgusted that my granddaughter has been allowed to collect over 700 stuffed animals since she was able to grab them... wtf?

I am annoyed that people feel they have to have the latest and greatest Whatzit, scrapping their Other One but charging huge amounts of money to the poor sucker who is wanting to buy a recycled one.

I am furious that I got sucked into watching "Survivor" and even though i know how it all ends - with four people scrabbling to undermine each other - proving that we are nothing but curs after all, and still finding the human spirit and potential meanness is alive and well... just a few thots...

  3. All right. I sort of love some reality TV but beyond that- I'm with you although have you ever tried horehound candy? It may be worse than black licorice. Oh wait. I like pumpkin pie but I like sweet potato pie better.

  4. I agree with you about everything except pumpkin pie and hockey. Well, I kind of HALF agree about hockey. Regular season play sucks. But the playoffs are still pretty good, once they've weeded out the no-talent losers who rely on violence instead of hockey skills.

  5. Let's see...first I love licorice and reality shows...yes, I confess...
I do hate people in Walmart who take up the isle chatting and blocking with their buggy.
I hate most all green vegetables...they make me gag and remind me of the spankings I received as a child for trying to hide them under the rim of my plate.
I hate it when someone comments something so ugly on my blog and think I am stupid enough to really approve it...
    I hate getting old!
I hate people who tailgate my car...only makes me drive slower.
There is more, but now I feel like I need to scream or throw something. Lol! So I will go back to blogging.

  6. I love pumpkin pie... other than that, i pretty much agree with your list. i'm on the dreaded FB and twitter but it's mostly because my family is there... and they are awful at emailing me, sending pictures, etc but they post them on FB... bleh

music.... add Phillip Phillips to that list... he's wonderful! as for pop music though... nothing new out there... i do like some other things out there though... willie nelson, madeline peyroux, among others...

i don't like reality tv much either... i do like xfactor and that stupid idol show though (shoot me know lol)

  8. I HATE hockey too! Like totally hate it. The lockout? Best thing ever in my house.

I love Pumpkin pie though, and music. And Twitter. I only follow funny people though and as soon as anyone has chronic mispeslling, I delete them. Hate Facebook though. HATE it. I loved it while finding people I hadn't seen in 30 years, but when I found out through FB my mom died? Well, that was it for me.

And music? Girl! There's some great stuff out there. Too bad we have to weed through all the auto-tuned/overplayed crap to find it!

  10. I also hate black licquorice, pumpkin pie and nearly all Reality TV - except So You Think You Can Dance which is a talent show I guess - and oh, so talented.

I just don't "get" hockey so I can't even rummage up enough emotion to hate it.

I quite like Facebook but I only have friends on there that I would be very happy to sit down to dinner with, or meet for drinks. So that's about 40 then.

    I do like mascara!

I hate snakes, people that eat noisily, a'hole drivers, and those crappy magazines that photograph and comment on "celebs" - the "Who wore it best" kinda stuff. Really?

Ohh - I need a cuppa now. Haha.

  11. You are so not alone on most of these.

    1. I live in KW. The only Oktoberfest parade I recall, I watched on tv because my grade 5 teacher was Miss Oktoberfest that year (about 1969) but it should be better than your experience anyway. I do like the men in kilts playing bagpipes that I have seen in parades

    2. agree

    3. agree - except for the good black licorice from Australia

    4. I don't wear makeup like I used to and I try to use "better" stuff when I do

    5. agree x 1000

    6. depends - sometimes the texture makes me gag. I do like pumpkin muffins, bread, soup

    7. agree

    8. agree

    9. agree

    10. mostly agree

    addendum - agree

Which hall are you Oktoberfesting at? I don't know if we're getting tickets this year or not - we are usually get tickets at Concordia because we do their paving...and we did that a couple weeks ago...

  12. Welcome back.
I am with you for most of your list as well. We get virtually no hockey televised, so swap that with football.
I hate the description of gifted and dedicated athletes as heroes.
I have never eaten pumpkin pie - but am a bit suspicious about it.
I hate that cilantro/coriander leaves are scattered everywhere. I don't like the stuff and the 'little bit of garnish' makes my whole meal taste foul. Leave it out OK?

  13. Well, you're certainly not alone. Most of the things you don't like, I don't like either. Except for pumpkin pie. I really like that!

And I'm so glad you added Julia Roberts. I've never understood what the big deal is about her. Bleh.

    7. Hate...not on either..
    8. Hockey is part of our family...I don't mind it...not upset that there is a lockout...
my boyfriend played and coached for many many years...
    9. If I know what I am looking for, it is OK...but not to just wander from store to store...I prefer Winners, where you can do one-stop shopping...
    10. Love all kinds of music..not so much today...But there is always a catchy one that comes along...

  15. Hi Birdie - thanks for popping over to Steampunk at the Closing Ceremony ... I try and look on the bright side of life ... but I'm not happy about football being back on the scene. Love liquorice!

Cheers from the positive side of life ... and now I have an inkling on Steampunk - I'll be more aware ... Hilary

  16. Black licorice, bleh, ick, gah!

Oh gosh, I try to not think of all the crap that is being absorbed into my skin when I put on all my makeup. Without it (and jewelry) I almost feel naked and don't even want to go out without. I'm even the girl you see in your rear view mirror applying lipstick at the red light. Yeah, sorry. lol

Don't do Twitter but I'm still on FB. And I posted a photo of my burnt lunch today. Really. But I don't have that many friends there. Of the 83 I do have, only 20 or less talk to me. I call it Fakebook. And then post something. Not sure why I can't give it up.

    Older music is the best!

    Good post!!

  17. I never thought it possible, but you have made me laugh. You hate these things with such a wonderful passion, I am impressed.

Most of the stuff you hate, I dislike too - I don't do Hating with a capital H - except for the stuff I don't know about, like hockey or pumpkin pie.

Can't be bothered to waste time hating, I just leave the stuff alone.

I am so glad to see that you can get so beautifully angry, you are well on the way to recovery. Anger is good, it's a sign of returning life.

  18. Oh we would get along just fine I think :)

I don't love hockey either, and I'm Canadian!!

  19. How i love your two posts on love and hate lists. So funny, well this one particularly. Parades, sometimes, it depends on the crowds and the weather and if I am at the front and can leave when I need to.I quite like Julia Robert's mouth. Licorice is ok but I wouldn't search it out these days. I used to eat Licorice root. Make up I do use but only lightly, it doesn't work too well on my skin type. Reality TV, some but not so much these days for the reasons you give. Love the sound of Pumkin Pie but don't think I've ever had a taste of a traditional one. Pumkin soup yes. FB and twitter, twitter more than FB, I hate FB but am stuck in a love/hate relationship with it. Twitter helps me stay in touch with news and the current opinions. Agreed on hocky and shopping.

I cannot agree with number 10 as I love, love, love music of all types.

  20. You're back full on!

    Yeah!

Most of the things you hate I either never tried or saw, like hockey, licorice (what is that?), pumpkin pie (for me pumpkin goes in soup...).

But music??? HELLO? You have to come shake your body here with me woman!

    Ahahaha!

    Loved the post!

Facebook... sorry but I need to keep contact with my home people;)
